Currents of Belief

25" X 37" - wood, shell, hemp

The great Polynesian navigators of the Marshall Islands created stick charts (a.k.a. Rebbeliths) to depict the ocean currents in relationship to the islands of the southern Pacific. Using these charts and memory as guides, the navigators were able to cross stretches of open ocean by feeling the direction of the currents, the temperature of the water, and subtle signs of birds and clouds. My rebbelith charts the spiritual journeys many of us take searching for truth, hope, salvation, enlightenment, or just a right way to live. The islands on this current map are but way stations for ever longer journeys to deeper understanding.
